If you care about the herbs, spices, roots, and tea leaves, it makes sense to care about the bag that holds them.

One question we receive from time to time is whether DelighTeas pyramid tea bags contain plastic. The short answer is no, DelighTeas tea bags are plastic-free in the sense that they contain no conventional petroleum-based plastics. They are 100% compostable, including the bag, string, and tag.

That short answer matters, but it does not tell the whole story. The material may look different from a classic paper tea bag, and the fine mesh can raise fair questions. Here is what our tea bags are made from, how they are sealed, and why we use this style for our blends.

What DelighTeas pyramid tea bags are made from

Our compostable pyramid tea bags are made from PLA, which stands for polylactic acid. PLA is a plant-derived material produced from the starches of plants such as corn, sugar cane, and cassava.

Because the mesh is fine and translucent, it can look similar to nylon or other synthetic materials at first glance. But our tea bag mesh is not made from conventional petroleum-based plastic.

The material choice gives us a way to offer a tea bag that is convenient and clean.

Why we use a pyramid mesh bag

Many DelighTeas blends contain whole or larger-cut ingredients. These ingredients need space to open, move, and release flavor as they steep. A flat paper tea bag can restrict that movement, especially when the ingredients are less finely cut.

The elegant pyramid shape is a premium option that gives the botanicals more room to expand in hot water. That helps support a fuller infusion while still offering the ease of a ready-to-steep tea bag.

How the tea bags are sealed

Another common question is what holds the mesh together.

Our tea bags are formed and sealed using ultrasonic technology. This process uses high-frequency vibration to create localized heat. That heat fuses the material at the seal points.

This means the bag does not require glue, staples, or another added sealing material. No polymers are added during the sealing process.

That detail is important because materials can become more complicated when extra binders, coatings, or adhesives are used. We chose a construction method that keeps the bag simple while allowing it to hold its shape during steeping.

What about the string and tag

The pyramid portion is not the only compostable part of the tea bag. The entire tea bag, including the string and tag, is compostable.

That was important to us. Convenience should not require separating several small parts before disposal. A tea bag may seem like a small item, but small choices add up when they become part of a daily ritual.

The goal is simple. We want the outside of the tea bag to reflect the same care we put into what goes inside it.

What compostable means for disposal

Compostable materials are designed to break down under composting conditions. PLA generally breaks down best in active composting environments where heat, moisture, and microbes are present.

Composting options can vary by city, county, and composting program. Some municipal or commercial composting programs accept PLA and similar compostable materials, while others may have different rules. If you use a local composting service, check their guidance for accepted materials.

If you compost at home, conditions may vary depending on temperature, moisture, pile size, and how often the compost is turned. A home compost pile may not break down PLA as quickly as a managed composting facility.

The simplest guidance is this:

  • If your composting program accepts PLA, place the used tea bag there.

  • If you compost at home, expect breakdown time to vary.

  • If composting is not available, dispose of the tea bag according to your local waste guidelines.

A simple answer for a better cup

DelighTeas pyramid tea bags are made from plant-derived PLA, not conventional petroleum-based plastic. They are sealed with ultrasonic technology, so no polymers are needed for the seal. The full tea bag, including the string and tag, is compostable.

For us, the tea bag is part of the tea experience. It should protect the quality of the blend, allow the ingredients to steep well, and align with the values behind the cup.

So when people ask whether DelighTeas tea bags are plastic-free and compostable, the answer is clear: yes, they contain no conventional petroleum-based plastics, and the entire tea bag is compostable.
